I found some great thoughts on this topic by Master Payne at that Green Place.
Contests Stonewick on 7/12/12
I've entered a close up contest and have a question. I have been told that judges at magic contests look for character, originality and presentation over mechanics and digital prowess. All things being equal, is it generally better to do a short (unified) set with different textures that highlights various skills, or one longer routine that builds to a punchy ending, even if it runs a couple minutes short of the allotted time?
Gift Magic Stonewick on 1/12/12
I've worked up a short piece I feel would make a good opener to a close up set. While writing the script It occurred to me that this piece would also lend itself well to gift magic. Would a gifting piece at the top of a short set create an imbalance? Or is it better to leave any gifting as a closer? Any thoughts?
